Moods by Louisa May Alcott

c. 1870, likely third printing. Contains original text.

Illustrated by Frank T. Merrill

Published by Boston Publisher Loring, this is an early reprint of what Louisa referred to as her "first born".

MOODS was first published by Loring in 1865.  In 1882, feeling her book was misunderstood, Louisa issued an updated edition with changed and added text.  When it was first published, MOODS was not well received. Louisa wrote in her journal, "Some fear it isn't moral because it speaks freely of marriage. My next book shall have no ideas in it, only facts, and the people shall be as ordinary as possible; then the critics will say it's all right. I seem to have been playing with edge tools without knowing it.  It was meant to show a life affected by moods, not a discussion of marriage, which I knew little about, except observing that very few were happy ones."

Bound in green cloth covered boards adorned with gold gilt.

Fair/Good Condition.   Gilt is bright and clean. Some light rubbing to gilt bands and top and bottom of spine. Some scuffing to back and front of green cloth covered boards, with a black transfer rub (likely from being shelved next to another book) on back cover near spine. See photos.

Slight shelf lean but books stands well on its own.

Inside: Brown endpapers are scuffed. Book pages are crisp and clean. Binding is good.

Tissue guard between frontispiece and title page has a tear in it. See photo.
