Essays: Second Series, by Ralph Waldo Emerson
First Edition, Binding A (BAL 5198)
Published by James Munroe and Company, Boston. 1844
Contains Emerson's essays: The Port; Experience; Character; Manners; Gifts; Nature; Politics; Nominalist and Reality; Lecture at Armory Hall.
Condition Notes:
Rebacked. Fair Condition.
Like the essays "Experience" and "Character" found within its pages, this volume has had some experiences that altered its character and led to rebinding by a book binder who preserved the cover boards and as much of the original spine as possible. Please see up close photo of spine. Original brown decorated clotch covered boards have wear around the edges with some chipping of cloth and exposure of boards, particularly on the edges of the front and back covers. Right bottom corner on cover is dinged with small exposure of board.
Inside, the binding is good. At the title page, there is cosmetic cracking and exposure of hinges between cover and title page. Binding remains secure here and throughout the book. Heavy foxing throughout front pages of the volume; moderate foxing throughout rest of book.
